Comments:
Hopfner & Seipel 2003: 2-piece table with lower wings; back and ribs of bird’s-eye maple. Neck, fingerboard, and tailpiece not original. Youngest year-ring on table dated 1655; both halves from same tree. Dimensions: 69.4, 31.3/22.2/41.0, 13.2, -. Hopfner 2003: replacement neck is grafted, so pegbox and scroll (in 17th-C. English style) are likely “at least older if not genuine”. Back as well as table has 2 wings; purfling now extremely close to the edges of both. Arching relatively high and very full. Interior construction not original except soundpost plate. H. Müller, Methodik des Viola-da-gamba-Spiels (typescript) gives dimensions 69.0, 31.0/--/41.0, 13.0, 71.0 and says restored by W.E. Hill & Sons, London.
