Comments:
Martius JCH 26. Table with medium arching, wide edge and slight recurve; very short, original, integral bass bar. Back with no purfling, very wide soundpost plate, 3 crossbars (only one original); wide corner blocks; top block not original. Neck with stripe of contrasting color wood on each side from rewidening after cello conversion, probably when “Rep. Hermann Seyffarth / Instrumentenmacher in / Gohlis 1901” (handwritten label); pegbox carved on all sides. Second repair label: “Rep. von Rudolf Elger / Lauten und Leigenmacher / in Leipzig 1948” [printed except 48]. Head original but all fittings modern except hookbar, and (perhaps) ornamental iron endpin. Dendrochronology (by Micha Beuting) gives date of 1721 for youngest growth ring on table; from same tree as JCH 36 (= GROTH 1, undated). Back widths 30.0/21.3/37.0; drawing by Ute Singer (2011) at museum. Kinsky dimensions 69, 31/-/37.5, 13, -.
