Comments:
Dolmetsch 1978: “When found in a London music shop, it had its original narrow neck, pegbox and scroll, pegs, fingerboard, and tailpiece.” Replacement for worm-eaten fingerboard by A. Dolmetsch. Tailgut. Hayes 1930: then owned by A. Dolmetsch, string length 49.5, rib depth 10.2. (J. Dolmetsch to TGM, 7+8/12: “AD bought the viol in 1899 from his friend W.H. Hill”; it “was in William Hill’s own collection which was not on sale to the public.”) Woodfield 1984, notes this viol has “the characteristic flat-sided Venetian scroll,” also that table has a “central thickening in the form of a spine carved on its underside.”
