Hellwig 1980: Date c. 1680, based on shape and placement of soundholes. 2-piece table, inlays not original, outline and arching altered; 2-piece back (arched) with glued-on carved ornaments at top, middle, and bottom. Dimensions: 67.0, 30.9/25.1/38.1, 12.0, -. TGM: Restored by Lloyd Adams, Boston, 1968 (was a cello when Caldwells purchased); later by Paul Reichlin, Zurich (fingerboard and tailpiece copied from Hellwig no. 128). Pegs, pegbox, and bass bar not original; head old but probably not original, may be poor copy of the original. Dimensions 66.9, 30.9/22.1/38.3, 11.9, 67.6. “Repaired by Chas. F. Albert, 205 S. 9th St. / Violin Maker and Repairer / Philadelphia, Dec. 1909” [printed except Dec. 1909, crossing out printed date 189-].
