Comments:
Originally a bass viol by Nicola Amati, converted to a cello by Antonio Stradivari. Internal inscriptions on table and back: “réparé par Chanot, 1863”; ribs not original, presumably by him. Known as the “Vatican Strad” due to painted decoration at top of back, allegedly including papal coat of arms; at top of table, angels; at bottom of both: plant material (all presumably hiding joints where new wood was added.) Tarisio.com (no. 49233): “Scroll [i.e., pegbox] originally fitted for six strings”; lists certificates from Biddulph (2014), Beare (2008), Becker (1974: “originally made as a six-stringed bass viol by Nicolaus Amati”), et al. Sold in 2014 by Tarisio Private Sales; as of 2022, on loan from a Mexican foundation (Academia de Arte de Florencia) to Nadège Rochat. Body length is on back, widths also?
