Edmunds 1994: date 1560-80; SL 52. Van der Meer 1993: composite, “parzialmente forse di Antonio Siciliano, Venezia, secolo XVI–XVII” (Woodfield 1984, p. 130: by Antonio Ciciliano). Table and back obviously cut down to present size; ribs, if old, altered to fit this outline. Two-part, flat back with (large) fold. No bass bar, no plate for soundpost; soundpost, lower block, corner blocks, linings, purfling, bridge, tailpiece, and pegs not original. Neck, pegbox, and scroll are one piece of wood. Ferrari 1987-88: typical of early Venetian school; neck originally fastened with 3 nails, now with a modern screw; 2-piece back with joint well to the treble side of center; interior crossbars also not original; table with rather high arching (carved); label identical to those in the Vienna Ciciliano viols. Dimensions BL 46 front (48 back), front widths 23.5/15.0/26.5, ribs 10.5, SL 50 (with bridge below middle of soundholes).
