Otto & Adelmann 1975: Repair label: “Arranschirt: von Michael Peters / in Wegberg Anno / 1801” [handwritten; in same hand as “1627” label]. 5-piece table with rosette, double purfling, and 16 groups of diamonds not connected to perimeter lines; purfled soundholes and rosette. 2-piece back (with 2 wings) has diamond groups at bottom, below fold, and at neck, not aligned with center joint; ribs also have 2 diamond groups on each side. Scroll not very carefully made, doesn’t belong (completely open in back); fingerboard and tailpiece not original, with wild grain swirls at bridge end of each. At top of back, pattern of many round wooden plugs, perhaps to fasten back to top block; 9 more midway along neck, which has been narrowed and later widened. Drawing by Olga Adelmann (1956) available from museum. Snoeck 1894: Fantasy model. Sachs 1922: Viola bastarda mit...phantastischem Umriß. Neck not original; instrument apparently originally had only 6 strings. Otterstedt 2004: dendrochronology gives date of 1621 for youngest growth ring on table.
