Warning to posters of classified ads:

There are scammers out there in cyberspace (in Africa and Eastern Europe, mostly) who may contact you and pretend they want to buy the item you advertise for sale. I responded to one of these con artists -- after all, he already had my email address -- and have reproduced the conversation below so you can see how it works. And don't be fooled by offers of a "cashier's check". These are easily forged. Apparently they all make offers very much like this. My subsequent reply was not to the scammer but to the login "abuse" at his ISP. Email to this login goes directly to the administrator at all legitimate ISPs. A prompt reply thanked me and noted that the account had been closed (probably had been hacked into, as the scammer uses a different name from the account) and my report turned over to a Federal agency actively investigating this scam. This incident occurred in 2003, when you had a fair chance of getting hold of a real administrator if you sent email to abuse@domain-name. These days e-mail accounts--and whole domains for that matter--are handed out like candy, so don't even bother to report the scam, just throw out the email, and my apologies in advance for any cyber-inconvenince resulting from your ad.

thanx ken for quick response,
i'm presently in Asia for my pet project-'child care trust'and
won't be back in u.s till ending of next month cos of my tight
schedule,but that shouldn't stop me from dealing with you,as i have a
client of mine in the u.s who owes me $12,000
and wants to pay me in check.
lf o.k by you,let me call him to draw the check in your name,so
that, you remove the money for the Tenor viol, then remit the
rest to my shipper in dublin, who would be using it to clear my other
goods.Then i would need your full address,name
and phone no.At this point ken i will espect us to deal with honesty
and faith.thanx.terry
